Evacuated tube collectors are great in all weather conditions. This is because the tubes that carry the sun's heat are contained within a vacuum. Because vacuum's don't transmit heat, no heat is lost during cold weather. The air can be bitterly cold but the system will still work because of the vacuum insulation. However, evacuated tube solar collectors are more expensive than flat panel collectors.

This means that flat panel collectors might be more suitable for seasonal use. If you have a camp or cabin that you only use during the summer, cold weather performance might not be as important so you can save money by using flat plate collectors.
