Wind Power Analysis
Before investing into a small-scale wind turbine, we highly recommend having a professional assessment. The
reason is that harnessing wind energy is very dependent on the site and careful positioning is essential to
good performance.
Sundog will lease and install an anemometer to you, to test and record your sites wind availability.
The rule of thumb when designing a wind turbine is for the swept area of the blades to be 30 feet above any
obstructions within 500 feet of the turbine.
Another important consideration is the height of your tower. Since the average wind speed increases with height,
the higher up you go the better. For example a wind turbine atop a 100 foot tower opposed to a 60 foot
tower typically produces 25% more energy annually.
This is also great news because the state of Maine offers larger cash rebates the higher the tower
is!
